Olympic College softball came up short in both games of Saturday's doubleheader against Pierce College, but the Rangers continued to show flashes of resilience and fight throughout the day, highlighted by Aaliyah Villafuerte's momentum-shifting home run that sparked the dugout and energized the home crowd.
Pierce set the tone early in the opener, capitalizing on a big offensive showing to pull away for a 26–3 win. Olympic stayed aggressive at the plate despite the early deficit, with Itagia Fonoti leading the way offensively by going 2-for-2 and swiping two bases. Adrianna Crowley and Leah Baker each drove in a run as the Rangers looked to manufacture offense against a deep Pierce lineup. Fonoti also went the distance in the circle, battling through five innings and continuing to take on a heavy workload early in the season.
The Rangers responded with more competitive energy in the second game, pushing across nine runs and stringing together quality at-bats throughout the lineup. Villafuerte delivered the defining swing of the day, launching a three-run home run as part of a four-RBI performance that accounted for nearly half of Olympic's scoring. She finished the game with two runs scored and set the tone offensively from the top of the order. Natalie Brierly added two RBIs, while Raylyn Pocaigue and Fonoti each drove in a run as Olympic leaned on patience at the plate, drawing nine walks as a team.
Despite the offensive surge, Pierce used multiple big innings to secure a 21–9 victory in the nightcap. Penina Tali worked five innings in the circle, continuing to anchor the pitching staff while the Rangers searched for consistency against a powerful Pierce lineup.
Saturday's doubleheader served as another measuring stick for an Olympic team that continues to compete deep into games and show offensive potential. Villafuerte's home run marked a positive step for a lineup looking to build confidence, while the Rangers' ability to draw walks and generate run-scoring opportunities will be areas to build on as the season progresses.
Next games will be Wednesday afternoon here at Fairview Middle School. First pitch is at 4 pm - sounds like the perfect way to start your spring break. Come on out and support Rangers Softball!
