Campbell & Ochiengll Named to Northern Region Sportsmanship Team
Sophomore Lily Campbell (Track & Field) and Freshman Kennedy Ochiengll (Cross Country/Track & Field) have been named to the inaugural Northern Region Sportsmanship team.
The Northern Region Student-Athlete Sportsmanship Awards recognize student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through demonstrated acts of sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In conforming to the philosophy of the NWAC, the characteristics of Community, Character and Competition were considered in the selection process. This is the first year the North Region has made regional Sportsmanship selections.
"These two student-athletes fully embody the NWAC motto of 'Community, Character, Competition," says Athletic Director Barry Janusch, "They are great representatives of Olympic College Athletics and the sportsmanship ideals we strive for."
Sophomore Lily Campbell was a thrower with the Track & Field and will graduate Olympic College this month. She has signed a letter of intent with College of Idaho to continue both her education and track & field career. "She always had a smile on her face no matter how difficult the day was," shares head track coach Jakan Austin, "When a teammate was having doubts about if she was good enough to be on the team Lily pulled her aside and encouraged her and helped give her the confidence to keep competing and improving. If there was ever a time that someone was disappointed after a meet Lily would always say, "We always have next time". Her positive attitude always shined and truly made her an asset to our team."
Freshman Kennedy Ochiengll competed in both Cross Country & Track & Field. He is an exchange student from Naiobi, Kenya, and this was his first time ever running Cross Country and Track. "Kennedy's dedication to the sport was an inspiration to all of his teammates," shares Austin, "He never missed a single practice during the entire season. It was obvious to the team that Kennedy put his heart and soul into his training. It was inspiring to watch him improve his times with each meet. A great example of his determination and work ethic was at the 2019 Cross Country Championship where Kennedy tore his quad during the meet. He did not let this stop him from finishing even though he was in excruciating pain. He was determined to finish the race and show everyone how much he genuinely loves the sport." Kennedy will return to OC this fall.
